^Considered by many to be the best vector game ever made! The 3-D with the trench run was really amazing. Putting several mini-games into one was a sure winner (see also Gorf). I knew the patterns to the Light Cycle and Tank screens to the point where I literally could've rolled the game over at a million at one point but stopped at 999,959 (I was on the Grid Bug screen and if I shot just one more it would've rolled over). Years later I had forgotten a lot of the patterns and the last time I played it at a gaming expo I couldn't even break 150,000 Nice to have a bit of an obscure one here. Same as the above where mini-games made it cool. Having the warp rather than the original shield on Phoenix wasn't as good but it wasn't a bad game. The taxi runway during the last wave was pretty original. This is a sequel to the 1980 arcade classic, Berzerk. Making shootable walls and bouncing your bullet back at you (at like twice the speed) really made this sequel different and stepped things up. Same with the "Mother Otto" and the maze where if you shot the power station the robots would freeze. Why this didn't do better in the arcades I never understood.
I'll have to do one or two of these myself.

Can't Think of a Name That taxi runway round where you have to land the ship the right way? That round, everytime I play Pleiades, makes me so nervous. ๐

Yeah, that's the one Had a great book from back in the day (which was left behind and lost when I moved a couple of years ago ) called How to Master the Video Games, having 30 arcade games with drawings and all. They gave a good tip for Pleaides, being that you use one finger on each hand to press the left and right buttons when you navigate through that stage. Seems easier to me.

Game: Challenger Manufacturer: Centuri Year: 1981 Players: 2 This was a pretty cool collision of Space Invaders and Asteroids. You controlled a ship at the bottom of the screen. Huge rings would float around; like with Asteroids, shooting one would split into smaller rings. The player's ship fired in a cone formation. Also like with Asteroids, bonus U. F. O.s would appear, although in this case they were known as Space Bogeys. A big blue ship (a bit reminiscent of the AT-ATs from many of the Star Wars films) would appear during waves; once they stopped moving and the player docked with the right side of it they would get a bonus. The player's ship could also warp to the top of the screen. Check out the big bass musical score when the player docked at about 1:36. That was freakin' cool.
Due to Atari having the Centuri license and releasing Phoenix and Vanguard for the Atari 2600 (and the latter for the 5200), Challenger was also supposed to have gotten a home release but never did (probably due to the video game crash). I've also wondered how that would've turned out with the flickering problem the 2600 had in many games.
