Alabama Governor Convicted - April 1993 Gov. Guy Hunt of Alabama, a Republican, was convicted, April 22, of diverting money from an inaugural fund to his personal use, a felony. A circuit court jury in Montgomery delivered the verdict. The case involved $200,000 from Hunt's nonprofit inaugural fund that he had transferred to personal bank accounts and then spent. Hunt denied wrongdoing, and his lawyers planned an appeal based on the vagueness of the law; however, it was unlikely that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals would rule on the case before Hunt's term expires in January 1995. Required by state law to resign after his conviction, Hunt did so, April 22, and he was succeeded as governor by Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr., a Democrat. Hunt was sentenced, May 7, to pay $211,000 in fines and restitution and perform 1,000 hours of community service.
