I'm going to say that: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (The original and it's sequel, A's) are great for an action packed, yet relationship building magical girl genre. It's a good example of most modern day Magical Girl shows, which generally have shifted more towards the darker side of "the reality of the responsibilities of having magical powers".
Tenchi Universe (I know it's a spin off based on Tenchi Muyo!), but, I feel that the basic harem without being over the top perverted combined with the comedy that most American's can "get" is ideal for general comedy/science fiction.
Ah! My Goddess, in my opinion is very well done with lots of tension between the primary characters, has a romantic comedy overtone, and has a good alchemy of technology and "magic".
Negima! was a good starter for "weird" anime. A ten year old male "teacher" who's in charge of an all girls-school, who's really a wizard was a good set up for "okay, that's a little bizarre, but mostly light-hearted". There are others that I would recommend after getting a newbie's feet wet, that are more on the daring and bizarre side. After all, we watch anime because many Japanese people, apparently are strange, indeed! LOL

All I have is some of the manga in comic book form and I think one volume I got at a used book store. Here's my list: Sailor Moon Sailor Moon Crystal Slayers Fullmetal Alchemist Hetalia Ranma 1/2 Inuyasha Trigun

I think I've got Ah My Goddess on my website. (But to see it you have to have at least 25 posts). If I don't have it, I'll put it up. I think it's a fantastic series!
