I bought some Sega console from a co-worker a few decades ago when her kid had gotten tired of it. I thought it was that new Sega Genesis but instead it was some console I had never heard of called the "Master System". I could see why her kid had enough of it because there were only a few games with it I actually liked
One was Ys: The Vanished Omens. It was my first action RPG that I had ever played. Although not complicated all things (such as equipping your character) was new to me. But I started getting the hang of it and progressing through it. I talked to the townspeople and Sara, who gave you advice.
So I'm getting through the game, taking me a bit to get through that first boss, I found that secret opening to an additional maze with the mask, etc. Who knows what will be next!
So then I decided to see Sara at her shop in the village after not being there for a while. Instead some guy was in there and he said Sara had been murdered. That literally made me gasp out loud. I think it was the 8-bit graphic of this very sad man having to give me the news that did it. But at least he gave me one of the Y books that I needed (you need six to beat the game).
The other one was in regards to the sequel to Out of This World (called Another World in some markets). It was called Heart of the Alien, released on the Sega CD only. It was a big surprise that Lester had gotten killed. At least Buddy left his crematorium outside his office to honor and remember him by.
(And on a side note to the above, I was the first person to discover a mystery I still haven't solved to this day as to why on earth the death metal band Bolt Thrower was given a shouty when you beat the game. Even members of the band had never heard of it until I contacted Harm behind the Bolt Thrower FAQ like 15 years later! Probably no one on here knows but I'm still trying to find out.)
So, what parts of game stories or endings got under your skin?
